It is very difficult to have a loved one go through Alzheimer's but it is much more difficult for the person with Alzheimer's.

While my mom had Alzheimer's I found different ways to celebrate special times and communicate with her.

She still loved animals, jewellery, clothes, getting her hair done, music, going to social events and sitting with me watching funny TV shows.

She also loved treats so I always brought something special for her to eat that the nurse had approved of.

TIPS FOR HAVING A GOOD VISIT WITH A LOVED ONE WITH ALZHEIMER'S

1. Try to be a happy, uplifting person in your loved one's life! Hug them and tell them you love them!

2. Bring something they love like flowers or a treat!

3. Let them relax and just be with you. I think even if they can't show it, they know you are there.

4. Watch a funny show with them or listen to music.

5.If it's a nice day, take them outside to the garden. Just make sure they wear a hat.

6. If they are staying in a home that has events, join them. This was one of my favourite things to do with my mom!

A loved one with Alzheimer's needs our love and support more than ever.

My mom was not able to communicate the way she used to but we still found ways to share some good times and I treasure the moments we had together.
